A prayer on the occasion of the launch of the Victory Ground project


Father God

With great joy we thank you for this site, and for the blessing that it has been to so many people.

We thank you for South Lee School, for Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club, Sporting 87 football club and St Edmundsbury Council

We thank you for those who have had this vision to develop a sports hall, changing rooms and cricket pavilion; and for those who have enabled the vision to be turned into reality. We thank you for the Borough councillors and officers, for all that they have done to make this possible. We thank you for the generosity of all who have given time and money to the project. We do thank you for the lawyers, architects, engineers and builders – and for the gifts that you have given them.

We thank you for showing us what is possible when we work together.

We now ask, as the foundations are laid, for your continued guidance, provision and particularly for your protection for the builders. And we pray that this building and this site will continue to bring blessing to the children of South Lee School and to the people of our town and borough

We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, your Son, who has given us all things and who gave us himself, that we might know you and your eternal joy

Matthew 13.24-30,36-43 We look this morning at a parable Jesus told about the Kingdom on God (Matthew talks of Kingdom of heaven but others speak of it as the Kingdom of God) 1. Isaiah 49:1-7 What does it mean to be a servant of God?

Isaiah 49:1-7 This passage speaks of two servants. The first servant is Israel, the people of God. The second servant will bring Israel back to God. But then it seems that the second servant is also Israel.  It is complicated! But Christians have understood that this passage is speaking of Jesus. He is both the servant, who called Israel back to God, but he is also Israel itself: he is the embodiment, the fulfilment of Israel In the British constitution the Queen is the head of the State. But she is also, to a degree, the personal embodiment of the state. What the Queen does, at an official level, the UK does. If the Queen greets another head of State, then the UK is greeting that other nation. And if you are a UK citizen then you are, by definition, a subject of Her Majesty. Save yourself from this corrupt generation

Acts 2:37-47 Peter, in Acts 2:40, urges the people who listen to him: ‘Save yourselves from this corrupt generation’ How could he say that? How can you call any generation corrupt? It is very simple. Peter is speaking to a generation which has crucified the Son of God. Some people here may be landlords. I don’t know whether you ever have any problems getting rent. If you do, God knows what it is like! Jesus tells a story about a vineyard. The owner gave it to some people. He said to them, ‘Look after it for me. Care for it, enjoy it. All I ask is that you remember that it belongs to me, that it is my gift to you, and give me what is mine when I send my messengers to you for the rent. The owner goes away. Some time later he sends a messenger. The tenants beat up the messenger and send him away with nothing. The owner sends another messenger. The tenants do the same thing to him.
